Greetings Sorors, I want to be the first to say Happy Birthday to all the Sorors who have a birthday this February, just like me! I noticed that we have several sets of Sorors who have birthdays on the same day. This year your President turns 50, the Big One. I am expecting great things to happen in 2007 for the Sorority and for me.
It is time for our biggest fundraiser. Our annual Red and White Scholarship Ball is just one month away and the excitement is building. This year we are going to have a live band called Soul Content. I want to give special thanks to Soror Lori Simon for her securing the band for the dance. By now, all members of the Lansing Alumnae Chapter should have received your dance packets. Soror Wanda Lipscomb has spearheaded our Dance Committee into high gear to continue our momentum of another successful dance. Last year, Sorors, we made a profit of over $10,000 on the dance, YES $10,000 PROFIT. It is my hope that we continue to bond together and support our glorious sisterhood by participating in purchasing tickets or pursuing ads. Remember this is our major fundraiser for our graduating youth. More information about the dance will be forthcoming in the newsletter.
On Saturday, January 27th, Soror McConnell and I made our first presentation on the Power to End Stroke Campaign. It was made to 13 men at Trinity AME Church. The men received four of the informative brochures and asked plenty of questions. If any Soror is interested in volunteering as little as 30 minutes of time, then this campaign is the one for you. Kits are available with complete information on the warning signs of a stroke, the risk factors of stroke, and what you should do if you recognize any. The kit provides all that is needed to educate your audience. Furthermore we also plan to present to the local chapter of the Pan-Hellenic Council at their February meeting. The American Stoke Association has a campaign specifically addressing African Americans who are twice as likely as Caucasians to suffer from a stroke. The campaign hopes to reduce the rate by 25 percent by the year 2010.
Remember Sorors, we are still participating in our Healthy Lifestyle Initiative and trying to lose 5 pounds each. I hope you are having more success than I am.
